Slide 1: ==== ==== To find more information about Most Expensive Tea, please visit http://best-tea-talk.com/Panda_Tea.html ==== ==== Teavana is a popular retail chain of tea stores which tends to be located in high-end shopping malls, and which also sells its tea online through its website. This article sets out to answer the question of whether or not Teavana is overpriced, both in the sense of their loose-leaf teas, and their accessories such as teapots, cups, and tea infusers. It is widely known that Teavana's prices tend to be on the high side, when compared to other tea companies and sources of loose-leaf tea. If you do a quick web search you will find a number of people claiming that Teavana is a ripoff because of its pricing. I think the term ripoff is a bit of a subjective label, and also is too strong a word, so to begin the article I will say that Teavana is definitively not a ripoff, even though its prices are high. Whether or not it is worth the price, however, is up to you; there may be other companies that you would rather buy from. I have bought from Teavana before, but I tend to prefer other companies because I do think you can often get similar products elsewhere for a much lower price. Teavana's prices: just how high (and how low) do they go? The lowest prices on Teavana's teas vary as the company adjusts their prices, but as of writing this article, the lowest one I could find was $4.50 for 2 ounces. You may occasionally find cheaper items, by buying discontinued items marked down on clearance (the company occasionally marks items down by as much as 75%) or by using coupon codes or other special deals. However, most of the company's teas start around $6-7 for 2 ounces, and some of them reach up to $25 for the same quantity. One aspect of Teavana's pricing that I do not like is that their teas tend be labelled in the price of 2 ounces. This quantity is about half the amount which tends to be the standard in the tea industry. Usually, loose-leaf tea is sold in tins of about 1/4 pound, somewhere between 100 and 125 grams. This makes Teavana's prices look lower than they are to inexperienced buyers who have only glanced at the price tags on tins of loose-leaf tea in other stores, but have not actually compared it by weight. How much tea is 2 ounces? Two ounces is about 57 grams. Typically, about 2.5 grams of tea, sometimes less, is used to brew a single cup of tea. This means that two ounces will brew about 23 cups. However, with highquality tea like Teavana, it is often possible to use less leaf and still obtain a flavorful cup. Also, you can steep high-quality tea multiple times, in a process called multiple infusions, enabling you to get more than one cup from the same set of leaves. It is thus possible that two ounces could produce as much as 50 or 60 cups of tea.
Slide 2: My experience with Teavana is that their teas are consistently high enough in quality that they can nearly always be brewed at least twice, using standard western-style brewing. They also do not require abnormally large amounts of leaf, so I think it is realistic to expect to get a full 50 cups out of 2 ounces of Teavana tea. Expensive tea is still quite affordable: If we assume that the amount of cups in two ounces will range from 23 to 60, and the prices at Teavana range from $4.50 to $25 for this quantity, the cost-per-cup will range from about 7.5 cents a cup to just over $1 a cup. This is a pretty broad range of prices, but even for the most expensive teas, brewed once, and using a generous quantity of leaf, it is still much less than one pays for a typical cup of coffee in a coffee shop, let alone a beer, glass of wine, or mixed drink in a bar. Tea, even expensive tea, is quite affordable. Other companies: If you've read this far, I hope I have convinced you that the loose-leaf tea sold by Teavana is not all that expensive. But this does not mean that it is the best deal out there or that it is not overpriced. Is it worth it? This question depends not only on the product itself, but on the availability of alternatives. And whether or not there are good alternatives depends a lot on which product you are talking about. In my opinion, Teavana's strength lies in their fruit-flavored blends, blends which typically contain whole fruit ingredients, not just flavoring. It can be hard to find fruit teas and fruit herbal teas of comparable quality anywhere. So, if you are looking to buy these products, you might do well to shop with Teavana. But if you are interested in pure teas or herbal teas, it is my opinion that Teavana does not offer the best prices. I buy regularly from a number of different tea companies. Which company I would recommend would depend on which type of tea you are looking for--each company has different strengths. I will say, however, that in many cases, I have been able to locate pure teas (green tea, black tea, oolong tea, and white tea) similar to Teavana's offerings for half or even a quarter of the price. In summary: My opinion, based on the experience of sampling a broad range of teas both from Teavana and from other companies, is that Teavana's tea, while expensive, delivers consistently high quality. Their tea is not a ripoff, and does offer good value when compared to other drinks. However, to the true tea enthusiast, their pure teas, although high in quality, may seem overpriced.
