Read on for help with one decision you will have to make. Amazon.com Marketplace has two tiers. There's the free system, and then there's a paid system. If you plan to sell books as a sideline, I would suggest you start out with the free system - you only pay if you sell books. However, if you decide at some point that you want to get into it on a grand scale, you can upgrade at any time. It will cost you a monthly fee, which you'll recoup through savings in Amazon's commissions, plus it also provides you with a few extra perks. In fact, once you've gotten started with the basic system and find you enjoy selling books and other media items, and once you routinely sell at least 50 or 100 books or more per month, you definitely should consider going pro. But if you don't sell at least 40-50 books per month, you're probably better off with the free system. The main difference between the free system and the pro system is that your commissions per book will be slightly less. There used to be a second difference. It used to be that you had to renew your listings every 60 days if you had the regular account, but that's no longer the case. Your listings stay active for however long you want them to be. Here's one big advantage of the Pro program, though. If you have a lot of out-of-print books that are no longer listed in Amazon's catalogue, you may want to consider joining the Pro program. That's because it will allow you to create special listings for any and all of your books, whether they're part of Amazon's offerings or not. On the other hand, Amazon isn't exactly the place where a whole lot of people shop for out-of-print book. That place is Abebooks.com -- so you may want to keep that in mind as a potential back-up plan if you do have a lot of books that don't have listings at Amazon.com. So should you go Pro? My recommendation is to wait until you have sold enough books to know whether it will pay for itself. If it does, you should definitely go for it. Unless you have a high turnover every month, that regular monthly fee can start cutting into your profits, and you'll be better off staying with the free account.
