Slide 1: ==== ==== Now you can get lost in space, fly anywhere in virtual space, at any speed, in any direction and at any time in history..Check This Out: http://tinyurl.com/spacesim ==== ==== An increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change, this is due to air pollution. In 2007 the UN intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change forecasted that by 2100 global average surface temperatures would increase 3.2 - 7.2 °F, depending on a range of scenarios for greenhouse gas emissions, and stated that it was now 90 percent certain that most of the warming observed over century attributed by emissions of gases produced by human activities. The basic problem related to global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the ecological balance and pattern of precipitation, probably including expansion of subtropical deserts. Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with continuing transformation of glaciers and sea ice into sea water, other likely effects include changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, species extinctions. Global warming is the rapid increase in the earth surface temperature due to the greenhouse gases released by the human activity or the burning of fossil fuels to increase the concentration of pollutant content and as a result of that the increase in temperature has increased nearly doubled in the last 50 years and still it is continued, warming modifies rainfall patterns, amplifies coastal erosion, lengthens the growing season in some regions, melts ice caps and glaciers, and alters the ranges of some infectious diseases. The major greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 34-50 percent of the greenhouse effect; carbon dioxide which causes 5-20 percent; methane (CH4), which causes 1-5 percent; and ozone (O3), which causes 1-4 percent and some others are oxides of nitrogen and Chlorofluorocarbon. Recently according to the NASA sources their satellites has record a host of vital signs including atmospheric aerosols, factories, fires, deserts, and erupting volcanoes, atmospheric gases (including greenhouse gases), energy radiated from Earth's surface and the Sun, ocean surface temperature changes, global sea level, the extent of ice sheets, glaciers and sea ice, plant growth, rainfall, cloud structure, and more causing the global warming. There are various effect on the ecology due to the global warming some of them are listed they are as follows: 1. Effect on the Human being The Air pollution caused by the human activity like that from heavy industries causes various diseases like bronchitis and asthma, the inflammation of the respiratory tract and weakens the immune system and the polluted air released by the heavy industries is the main source of heavy metal pollution which can causes organ damages and death. The heavy metal cadmium and mercury causes damage to the kidney, lungs and the heart whereas the radioactive wastes can cause cancer. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has made the following conclusion related to global warming affecting the human kind; the health status of millions of people would be affected through like increases in malnutrition; increased deaths,
Slide 2: diseases and injury due to extreme weather events; increased burden of diarrhoeal diseases; increased frequency of cardio-respiratory diseases due to high concentrations of ground-level ozone in urban areas related to climate change and altered spatial distribution of some infectious diseases like dengue and malaria. 2. Effect on the Ecology or Nature The climate change due to the global warming results in the extinction of many species and a reduction in the diversity of ecosystems, above about a 4°C increase in global mean temperature after fifty years will lead to the extinction of many freshwater species. Similarly for the marine ecosystems would result in mass mortality of coral reefs globally and the Terrestrial ecosystems with a warming of more compared to now will likely that global terrestrial vegetation would become a net source of carbon and lead to major extinctions around the globe. Water containing toxic substances and chemical fertilizers kill aquatic organisms and the Eutrophication also causes the death of aquatic organisms. The gases released from various industries will result in the acid rain which corrodes the plants and also affects the absorption system of plants leading to the death hence affecting the food web. 3. Effect on the species leading to extinction The population of living organisms that cannot adapt to the environment decreases and finally becomes extinct due to spraying of chemicals made from pesticides this affects the secretion of hormones and the reproduction processes in the animals. Deforestation and soil erosion carried out by humans destroys the habitats and affects the lives of many wildlife species for example the Coral reefs are breeding grounds for many aquatic species the destruction of corals reef due to oil spills or sewage disposal from factories results in the extinction of many aquatic species and disturbing the ecology of aquatic system. 4. Effect on the Polar ice caps melting The effects on ecosystems, warming reduce the ocean's ability to absorb CO2 and the amount of oxygen dissolved in the oceans may decline, with adverse consequences for ocean life it will raise sea levels this is due to the reduction in incoming solar radiation, reflection of that energy back into space, fluctuations in atmospheric and oceanic carbon dioxide and methane levels, increased amounts of dust in the atmosphere such as that resulting from volcanic activity and heightened winds.. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, if all glaciers melted today the seas would rise about 230 feet that means our existence will be nowhere. The melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. Predicting the future of the ice caps is a difficult task. It is complicated by the interactions of the various factors that control the ice. One example is the possibility that the warming climate will reduce the areal extent of ice in the polar regions. The ice caps are fresh water, and when they melt they will desalinate the ocean. The temperature rises and melting of polar icecaps in the arctic will endanger several species of animals. Global warming poses one of the most serious threats to the global environment ever faced in human history. The environmental community rightly recognizes global warming as one of the gravest threats to the planet. Global temperatures are already higher than they've ever been in at least the past millennium, and the increase is accelerating even faster than scientists had predicted. The expected consequences include coastal flooding, increases in extreme weather,
Slide 3: spreading disease, and mass extinctions. An effective strategy or framework has to be developed to reduce the global warming at the earliest otherwise we already know the consequences because we have the responsibility to give back the same time what we had received to the next generation. Let us keep our environment green and clean to suit our future and generation. shiju mathew Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Shiju_Mathew ==== ==== Now you can get lost in space, fly anywhere in virtual space, at any speed, in any direction and at any time in history..Check This Out: http://tinyurl.com/spacesim ==== ====
