Slide 1: WORKING ON A CRUISE SHIP Learn about cruise line employment, both ship- and land-based jobs in the U.S. and worldwide. www.CruiseShipJobsNetwork.com
Slide 2: THE CRUISE INDUSTRY • CruiseShipJobsNetwork (CSJN) is a leading source of information about cruise ship jobs. • The largest cruise ships employ hundreds of staff in a wide variety of positions. Furthermore, cruise lines hire people to work in their corporate offices and for landbased jobs too. • Major cruise lines sail year-round. But there are many seasonal cruise jobs too. Those looking for a summer job might find one with a company operating in Alaska. • Cruise lines fill jobs through direct hires, but also use concessionaires and staffing agencies to fill needs.
Slide 3: ONGOING HIRING NEEDS • Approximately 20 new cruise ships have launched in 2007 and 2008. Each has a crew of several hundred to over 1,000. • Most major cruise lines recruit staff all over the world: the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Brazil…So working on a cruise ship is often a genuine international experience. • Concessionaires are often used to fill positions in cruise ship spas, casinos, and gift shops. Onboard photographers and golf instructors are also provided by concessionaires. • Alaska tourism is fueled by the cruise industry from May to October. Cruise lines often hire seasonal staff for Alaska jobs – both land- and ship-based. • In addition to jobs on large luxury liners one should consider positions aboard smaller, eco-cruise ships. • Working on a smaller ship usually means a greater, less specialized list of responsibilities.
Slide 4: CRUISE JOBS: LIKE THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY • Did you know that many jobs on a cruise ship are just like those in a hotel? The ship’s hospitality department might be hiring for these positions: – Housekeeping, food and beverage services, hotel administration, information systems, etc. • So, your chances of landing a cruise hotel job will be enhanced if you have hospitality industry experience. • And education in hotel administration won’t hurt
Slide 5: TYPES OF CRUISE LINE JOBS • The largest cruise lines recruit internationally for: – Hotel and spa staff – Chefs – Cruise Ship Entertainers (singers, dancers, musicians, magicians, etc.) – Officers • All cruise lines are recruiting engineers and deckhands – maritime industry positions. • Other positions could include naturalists, child care specialists, pursers, tour guides, nurses and physicians. • Of course, a cruise line’s corporate office also has extraordinary needs. • Learn more about positions on CruiseShipJobsNetwork.
Slide 6: YACHT CREWING • The opportunities are fewer, for sure, but yacht crewing jobs should be appealing to people who like to be at sea. • Jobs on a yacht are often short term / seasonal. Owners and staffing agencies often seek engineers, deckhands, mates, cooks, servers, and stewards. • It helps to be service oriented and multi-talented. An outgoing personality may or may not be a plus.
Slide 7: RELATED: JOBS AT BEACH RESORTS • If you can’t seem to get hired on a cruise ship or have had your fill of those jobs, then consider applying for resort jobs . • As previously pointed out, the cruise and hotel/resort industries have similar hiring needs: food service, bartenders, spa staff, etc. • There are hundreds of resorts located all over the world. While the daily work might not always be that rewarding, the extracurricular benefits might be a draw. Resort staff often enjoy benefits like: – Discounts on golf, tennis, diving, fishing charters, spa services, etc. – Incredible nightlife options
Slide 8: LEARN MORE • Working on a cruise ship could be an unforgettable experience of a lifetime, even if it’s a summer job in Alaska vs. a year-round position on a luxury liner! • Don’t forget to look into cruise line concessionaires as they actually have ongoing needs. Get your resume into their systems. • If your resume is not quite perfect, then try getting experience in the hospitality industry. • Get free information about working for a cruise line on CruiseShipJobsNetwork.
