The challenge is how to parent your children or being a parent who can positively guide and nurture children to be responsible adults. My wife and I have three children who are now young adults. We have had our share of mistakes and on looking back, we realize that the mistakes could have been easily avoided had we known about better techniques on how to parent positively. For certain, we read about the essentials on how to parent by the various child care experts and resource persons but we failed to benefit from most of such advice. Why? Because most of what we read or heard were rather generic and not specific to certain challenging situations or issues. What can we do to guide us and parent our children positively? Based on our experience, here are 3 points that offer guidance on how to parent positively: 1. Check how you convey your message As parents, we are concerned and care about the wellbeing of our children. However, this sometimes works against us. How? Such concern and care leads us to be impatient and forceful in our approach to correcting certain behaviours or actions that are detrimental to their development. When we come across something that needs to be corrected, our impatience can make us want to correct the behaviour immediately and urgently. This may result in us raising our voices or using facial expressions or body gestures that may not be appropriate. Many times I have heard children say that they are not questioning what was said but rather the manner in which the message was conveyed. 2. Lead by example. Walk the talk. If you think that certain behaviours are wrong and detrimental to children, we ourselves must not demonstrate such behaviours. For example, if you do not want our children to swear or use foul language, we must not use such language. If we want them to refrain from food or drinks that are bad for their health, we should not consume or indulge in such things. 3. Work and play Correcting behaviours does not mean sitting down and talking to your children. Though this is necessary and does work, it may not be the most effective way. The better way is to work and play
Slide 2: with them so that you can talk to them in an active way. They will be more receptive to what you say as you are willing to spend time with them to get something done or while they are having fun. The relaxed atmosphere helps.
