Slide 1: JavaOne 2002 • Moscone Center, San Francisco — Sixth annual — March 25th – 29th, 2002 — Over 15,000 in attendance — Joe Antonoff, Compendium Technologies, Inc. attended • Conference Overview — Main focus was how Java technology is great for Web Services — J2SE 1.4 Released February, 2002 — XML and security technologies 1
Slide 2: J2EE Versus .NET • Sun’s Web Services platform is Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) • J2EE’s main Web Services competitor is Microsoft .NET • J2EE vs. .NET – For development — .NET provided by a single vendor, J2EE has support from the entire industry — .NET marketed Web Services earlier, J2EE is catching up — .NET has better tools, making it easier to develop simple web services, J2EE is better for advanced/complex web services models • J2EE vs. .NET – For deployment — .NET is an immature platform, J2EE is a more mature, proven platform — .NET is tightly coupled with Windows OS, J2EE is hardware and platform neutral — .NET has a stronger security model, J2EE has a stronger connectivity model 2
Slide 3: J2EE Versus .NET (continued) • J2EE vs. .NET - Overview — J2EE web services cost less to develop and deploy — J2EE web services are more scalable and robust — J2EE shortcomings are being worked on via the Java Community Process (JCP) and future versions of the JAX (Java APIs for XML) and security APIs 3
Slide 4: J2SE 1.4 New Features • New I/O: java.nio package — Much faster than the java.io package — Approaches speeds of native languages — Can lock all or parts of a file with exclusive or shared locks (to prevent concurrent writes) — Non-blocking I/O 4
Slide 5: J2SE 1.4 New Features (continued) • Regular expression support: java.util.regex package — Pattern – Must be successfully compiled — Matcher –Does the grunt work • Logging: java.util.logging package — A better solution than using System.out.println – EX: logger.info( "Entering main method" ); • Assertions are now supported – assert is now a keyword • JAXP – The Java XML Parser – Is now part of the core API • SSL – Secure Sockets Layer support is now available • URL with links to articles about these new features: http://java.sun.com/j2se/ 5
Slide 6: JDK 1.4 Security APIs • Certification Path API (CertPath) • Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) API is now part of J2SE 1.4 rather than a separate download — Has “strong but limited” encryption security policies — Must still download the unlimited strength version separately • Java Authentication and Authorization Service (JAAS) API — API is now part of J2SE 1.4 rather than a separate download • Java Secure Sockets Extension (JSSE) API — API is now part of J2SE 1.4 rather than a separate download • Java Generic Security Service (Java GSS) API — Similar to JSSE • Java Cryptography Architecture (JCA) API is the underlying code to all of this 6
Slide 7: Java and XML • Mostly discussed as it applies to Web Services — Many topics had XML use at their core — Using XML with Digital Signatures — XML-based RPC with JAX-RPC — JAXB – Java Architecture for XML Binding — JAXM – Java Messaging — JAXP – Java XML Parser — JAXR – Java APIs for XML Registries — JAX-RPC – Java API for XML-based RPC • http://java.sun.com/xml/ 7
Slide 8: Miscellaneous Topics • Jini — Project Davis – Will provide security to the Jini framework when it is released – which currently is the main problem with Jini’s usefulness. • Wireless — J2ME – Java 2 Micro Edition and it’s uses in wireless devices 8
