"One day many years ago, as I was looking through a microscope at a tropical moth, to my surprise I noticed a tiny, perfect letter F hidden on the wing. I was astounded and wondered if I could find other letters. Perhaps I could even find the entire alphabet in the wings of butterflies and moths! I decided that I was going to be the first to try."
So wrote Kjell B. Sandved in his introduction to The Butterfly Alphabet. Little did he know that it would take him more than 25 years, with visits to more than 30 countries, to discover and photograph all the letters of the alphabet in butterfly wings.

• Legend has it that the holiday of Valentine's Day is named after a priest named Valentine. Valentine was a priest in ancient Rome. The Emperor, Claudius II, ordered the Roman soldiers NOT to marry. Claudius believed that as married men, his soldiers would want to stay home with their families rather than fight his wars.
Slide 2: • St. Valentine didn’t follow the law gave by Claudius. He married people in secret. He was caught, put into prison, and then killed. When he was in prison, he received many letters from his friends. This is beginning of the Valentine.
Slide 3: • When we write a letter, we are telling our reader about something we think is important for them to know. When we start a letter, we start with the date. It is in the upper right hand corner of the letter. We write the date so our reader will know when we wrote to them.

Slide 4: • The next thing we need to write in our letter is our SALUTATION! That’s our fancy way of saying hello! This is also called the greeting line. We need to make sure we write the name of the person who the letter is for.

Slide 5: • The next important part of the letter is what we call the body of the letter. This is the “meat” of the letter. This is where we talk to our reader. This is where we tell our reader what we want them to know.

• The last part of our letter is called the closing. It is where we tell our reader that the letter is finished. On the first line we put our closing words. On the second line we put our name so our reader will know who wrote the letter.
