Aspergers symptoms are worth knowing as a parent, teacher or care taker of young children. Even with the best of intentions and care we may feel at a loss and confused with certain children in our care. I came across such a child, I'll call "J". He was such a darling, intelligent, interesting person, yet quite strange and he needed our help. J, only four years old used very big and sophisticated words like "received" for get, "prostrate" for lying flat, or "urinate" instead of saying - I want to pee or go to the bath room. He stared at people in a way that his peers and other people felt uncomfortable. He was so intelligent but failed to understand simple social skills. He was clueless how people could get offended or hurt by certain behaviors that children of his age easily comprehend. He was very interested in insects. He could spend a whole day studying about the ants or the grasshoppers and he never got bored. I taught him Math using his insect counting interest. Taught him spelling with big words taking advantage of his extreme interest in Entomology too. But everything had to originate from BUGS. He became lonely and friendless as he grew up. He could not take any variation from his predicted routine. Any simple change was a monumental struggle for him. People started misunderstanding him and we realized that J needed help. His parents were sweet and understanding but they became confused how far to let J go his own way, or what to really believe. In the beginning I though he should be checked for Autism, or such thing, but I came to know that he had something called Aspergers syndrome. Some common Aspergers symptoms are: Lack of social skills Extreme attention to details The child can be very focused in the area of his/her interest but totally disinterested in other things. They hate any deviation from predicted routine They may be extremely sensitive to sound, texture or light They may experience difficulty in falling asleep
Slide 2: Many children with Aspergers Syndrome may (or may not) have coexisting conditions like: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Anxiety Disorder Depression Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Social Anxiety Disorder etc. Though we need to be aware before labeling any person with any syndromes, it is also important for us to be resourceful and get professional help when needed. Many respected historical figures have had such symptoms including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Thomas Jefferson. Educational programs like the Montessori method or other ones that understand the child's individual needs, guides to go deeper into the subject of the child's interest and allows to proceed at his/her own pace were found to be beneficial.
I have written more about this in my website in the page "Aspergers Symptoms" I have also given a link for a book that I found helpful where the author had the opportunity to deal with many Aspergers syndrome cases and specialized in that field. Dita Basu, a Montessori teacher and mom writes in her web site [http://www.bead-z-mommysbusiness.com] She taught Early Childhood classes in Saint Mary's College,CA and gave several Parent Education workshops through out the last twenty years. Her web site is for the work at home jewelry artist moms who work so hard for their art, parenting and home business all at the same time.
