Slide 1: ==== ==== Persuasive Speaking: How To Be Persuasive In Speech http://ow.ly/8tBSp ==== ==== The Skill of Persuasive Speaking Persuasion is the conscious use of human communication to introduce change. Your very words can be used to introduce change so that you will accomplish specific outcomes. It is within this context that we begin our own exploration of persuasive speech. Remember when you are just learning about persuasive speech, you have to take into account that persuasiveness is a state that is achieved by mastering the skill of persuasive speaking itself. So if you want to be a master persuader, you need to practice, practice, and practice some more. There are no shortcuts in the world of persuasion, so the earlier you start, the better off you will be. Categories of thoughts Before you can persuade someone to believe in something or do something for you, you need to understand how human thoughts are categorized. This will allow you to sift through the different information that you have in order to formulate better arguments when you need to persuade another person. Human thoughts are generally divided into the following categories: -Long standing beliefs -Core beliefs -Hard facts -Valuation systems Long standing beliefs include a persons beliefs regarding science, religion, and politics. These beliefs are closely held because an argument was made for each belief in the past. A person accumulates these beliefs through social contact, reading books, watching television, etc. Core beliefs, on the other hand, are essential beliefs that people hold on to no matter what (i.e. people shouldnt shoot and kill each other for no reason). Hard facts are bits of information accumulated from life experiences. Valuation systems are usually just categories that people use for people, places, and situations (i.e. computer geniuses are all good with programming computers). As you can see, each category of thought has a different nature and none of these categories of thought are easy to bend or modify. For example, it would be hard to convince people that they shouldnt vote anymore because voting is not really democratic. Youd be met with so much resistance that you probably wouldnt be able
Slide 2: to persuade anyone. The secret to persuasion Many people think that before you can effectively persuade anyone, you have to change what they know. This is simply not true. If this were true, we would all have a tough time convincing anyone to believe in anything because we would have to come up with arguments to change what people know. Heres a little known secret to persuasion you dont have to change what people know, you just have to change how they view the world. Changing a persons perspective and valuation of a subject or object is much easier than trying to change what he or she already knows. So if you are trying to persuade someone, focus on changing their point of view, not the information that they know. Dont try to replace Fact A with Fact B. Instead, tell the person that Fact B is more desirable than Fact A because of Reason A, B, C and so on. ==== ==== Persuasive Speaking: How To Be Persuasive In Speech http://ow.ly/8tBSp ==== ====
