I know for me what used to come to mind were people in a relationship across the country or across the world due to military deployment, business travel, or living separately after meeting through internet dating. Today what I want to address is the less talked about long distance love. This is the love that is over a shorter distance yet causes the same feeling of separation and loneliness. There are many circumstances that can make it difficult for two people to see each other in person but one that is becoming more prevalent is where one or both people have children at home. Especially during the beginning phase of a relationship, it is often inappropriate for the new lover to be part of "family" time and what unfolds can feel like an emotional roller coaster. Here's a pretty common scenario: Two people enjoy a beautiful long weekend together - whether it's playing in the ocean, eating scrumptious food, going to the movies or just cuddling up on the couch. The common element regardless of the activities is the unfolding of a deeper level of intimacy. There is a level of comfort and trust and a habit of eating meals together and sharing everything. So much bliss! Then it's time for the shift in custody for the next several days. This is when the shock of the separation leads to loneliness. I know because I have been in this situation more than once during my life. I wanted to be independent and act strong and take this time to get work done, clean the house, see friends... but being active only slightly lightened the blow. What I have found is that even with trying to keep busy I always felt like I was living two lives - the life of a single person and the life of a woman in a relationship all at once. I started to feel like I was crazy. It's like having multiple personalities, but instead it's multiple relationship statuses. My God, speaking of "status", to add even more stress... what do you put as your status on Facebook? There's no option for half time "in a relationship" and half time "single". Just thinking about that makes me laugh. Seriously now, this shorter "long distance love" is real and just saying it out loud feels good. What do they say when you have a problem - the first step is to acknowledge it? That's the reason for my post today. I am officially acknowledging that there is a problem. Even though the physical distance may be short in terms of miles the long distance love is real when you look at how "long" two people have to communicate from a distance. So, what works to bridge the distance? I have found a few strategies that have helped me.
Slide 2: Setting time aside to create intimacy over the phone with true depth and connection is the best solution for me - at least it's better than nothing. I know creating rituals or habits that foster closeness are key. For example, a nightly call to say good night or sweet dreams can make all the difference. Sending a quick text in the morning can be just the ticket. I know when I am out on a walk alone it helps me to take a picture of the beautiful sunrise and send it as a text to say good morning. Just reaching out through the phone can create a connection even if it is just across the phone line. Planning "chance" meetings. If you aren't at the point where you are being part of the new family this can be kind of fun. I remember when I was in a new relationship and we would plan chance meetings at the beach so it wasn't too uncomfortable for the child. It was just seeing a friend at the beach and deciding to spend some time together "spontaneously".
