First off, we are stuck with the most hobbled handsets which are vastly inferior to those supplied to the rest of the world. When Motorola or Nokia make a cellphone, it has many features that Europeans and others can use but are locked out by American carriers. American companies, such as Verizon, do not want you to have a handset which can easily accommodate some other carrier's chip or access another network. One of the worst things you can do is buy a subsidized phone and be stuck in a two year contract with heavy cancellation fees. There is no free lunch, and you pay for your phone through exorbitant billing schemes. Instead, buy an unlocked, unsubsidized GSM phone which allows you to swap out your SIM card when traveling so you can buy the cheapest SIM card of whatever country you are in. In addition, in certain circumstance it can even save you money with AT&T's data plan. For example, if you sign up for new service with AT&T you can get iPhone 4 for $199.00 with $25 per month limited dataplan for two years. This comes out to $799 without taxes and fees over the 24 month period. If instead, you buy a Samsung Galaxy S for about $535 from overseas (which includes shipping) you can get on AT&T's family data unlimited plan for $10.00 per month. This comes to $775 with much less taxes and less fees. If you want to tether your laptop to your phone, if you go with the iPhone 4 AT&T will charge you an extra $20 a month for this service whether you use it or not (That's a scam). With the Samsung there is no charge for tethering because this is a Google Droid Phone. In addition, with the iPhone 4 if you go over the 2 GB limit, you will be charged $10/GB extra, a fee you will not incur with your Samsung. Having such a phone will also allow you to easily switch to T-Mobile if you ever become unsatisfied with AT&T and allow you to buy SIMs for overseas use. Never use your American carrier overseas unless your provider allows you to place WiFI calls for free over the Internet. Otherwise the roaming charges will cripple you financially. Be aware that your SIM will be charged for incoming calls, even if you don't answer them, so make sure no one calls you on your out-of-country SIM except in emergencies. Turn off Internet dataroaming so that you do not get charged per-kilobyte which is a another type of scam. Regardless of the carrier you use, always ask for details on what you will or will not be charged
