The mathematics of this revolutionary theory evolved out of a practical need to manipulate specific scientific equipment and to communicate information about specific experimental procedures. As the most successful scientific theory of all time, quantum theory needs no ontological interpretation. Its most seasoned practitioners, in fact, do not recognize ontological claims as valid claims. Philosophical Differences Ontology is the study of what is. Epistemology is the study of what we can know. Ontology operates on the fundamental premise that there is an existence already in place to discover. Epistemology, by comparison, doubts any existence whatsoever, until we can observe it in precise terms. Quantum theory, thus, is the epitome of epistemology, because physicists who apply it most practically allow no place for ontological assumptions about real things that exist prior to observations and measurements. In the usual manner in which many physicists use quantum theory, observations and measurements are the only valid avenues to legitimate knowledge. Anything that we cannot observe and measure in quantum terms, therefore, has no reality. If we observe only probabilities of observing given events, then the most we can say about reality is in terms of those probabilities. Any additional speculations are fictions. The State Of Reality The modern scientific idea of "reality" is on very shaky grounds, because modern scientific theories have strayed far from human senses that have always given meaning to our apparently physical world. Some people might say that today's idea of "reality" is in a sorry state. Quantum physicists, of course, would say that this is an unscientific judgment and defer to their very precisely defined mathematical "state vector" as the only possible description of reality. Such devotion to mathematical methodology seems chilling to people ordinarily accustomed to more imaginative outlooks. Mathematical precision, however, allows only for mathematical imagination, which is every bit as wild as any other creative thinker's, but only in those experts who have mastered math's various forms. On the other hand, mathematical imagination is not as open as artistic imagination, and this, I believe, is the source of most arguments about how to

Many of the people arguing over interpretations simply are not trained in math, but these people seek a non-mathematical resonance with mathematical thinkers, nonetheless, and I suggest that this is a reasonable goal. The Real Argument I might even concede that there can be no legitimate scientific argument about the "best interpretation" of quantum theory, and by "interpretation," I mean "ontological interpretation." Clearly, the theory allows for a variety of ontological interpretations. Arguments about ontological interpretations, then, are aesthetic arguments, and aesthetic arguments have validity in their own domains (i.e., the arts). Why are there such heated arguments about a "best interpretation" of quantum mechanics? The answer to this question is that human beings generally need more than precise tools to build a meaningful life. We need a romantic vision to encompass our precisely measured observations. We need a broader outlook to enfold our anatomical and physiological structures. We need a conceptual interface between sensory perceptions and theoretical procedures. Such an interface is most assuredly aesthetic, as we humans find our greatest motivations in an object's or an idea's aesthetic appeal. Even science can accommodate aesthetics to appeal to the greater culture in which it is embedded. Scientific theories, thus, cannot escape the fate of being fashionable or out of style. Styles Of Interpreting Quantum Theory I am fascinated that a rigorous laboratory procedure such as quantum mechanics can coexist with such a variety of interpretive styles. Perhaps this fact, more than any other, speaks volumes about how truly great the theory is-it can allow for aesthetic preference as well as for arithmetic process. From the Copenhagen Interpretation, to Everett's Many Worlds, to Bohm's Pilot Wave, to hydrodynamic interpretations (my favorite), the math of the micro-world somehow manages to nurture the imagination of the macro-world. © 2011 Robert G.
