The meaning of clutter has more significance than a definition referring primarily to disorganized possessions. So that you'll keep them, many cluttered items make promises, so to speak, that they have their own value and can bring back sentimental memories that will warm the present. These promises of value are its power and magnetism, but they're also the key to the cure. If it doesn't match the vision you have for your home, it may not be junk, but it's clutter. Broken Promises: Products versus the Promises Why do we keep a broken appliance for so long, for example, even if it does only need one tiny part? Because, like buying new pots and pans that promise the idea of a warm family dinner, a broken blender still promises a quick breakfast once repaired. If you haven't used it for a long while, move it from the useable to the clutter category. A once useable product has lost its promise. The Meaning of Clutter, Your Core Goals and the Cure. Is your closet too full of clothes you will "wear someday"? Many times it's because we fool ourselves into thinking that our old high school sweater will fit again, just as soon as we lose some weight. Here's the principle behind why we don't unclutter our space, according to Julie Morgenstern, professional organizer. Unwearable clothes and a multitude of other once important things represent who we once were or wanted to be (so it's a mistake to label everything simply 'junk'). But "once their purpose is over, they just keep you stagnant" from enriching your life or career or self-expression. So for her, the meaning of clutter is anything that gets in the way of your present "core goals." The cure then is to ask yourself does this item help match my present vision of what I want for this room or space or my life? [Source: Time, Sept. 12, 2011] If it doesn't, you've found the meaning of clutter. Mail, Magazines and Book Collections It's true. Some collections of stuff just happen. No deep meaning here, normally. Counters, tables and shelves are common places for mail, magazines and books. Are you wondering if there are important items or merely clutter? Search through all your mail and magazines and get rid of anything that is over a month old, or file it away if it is important.
Slide 2: Books are a little bit different in some respects since many of us want our own small library. Keep the classics and your favorites, but occasionally go through your collection and donate less desirable books. You'll feel good by sharing them with others, not to mention that you'll clear out your site. Final Thoughts: Give Your Vision a Name Remember with new core goals, what once was important should be remeasured to see if it's promises still fit your present vision of your home and life. And give your vision a name, Julie suggests, to reflect the next phase of your life and dislodge you from your past. She suggests "creating a nurturing home, striving for career excellence and/or focusing on self-expression and enrichment." As for the rest, you can use the basic useable/ wearable/collectible scale on a variety of items around the house. If you can't or haven't used it for quite some time, toss it, sell it or give it away because it is now clutter!
