External harddisks aren't confined into a specific space and therefore they're usually a lot cheaper while offering more capacity. 250GB is still usual for laptops while 2TB is becoming a lot more usual for external drives, and that is about 10x that space! This allows you to easily save all your movie files, photo libraries, pictures, and sound files you could possibly need, all within one tiny box and ready for entertaining you whenever you feel like it.  Owning an external harddisk is the same as owning a complete backup solution, since it's all you need for a good backup of your PC's harddisk. No virus, hack or other problem can durably affect you if you have a good backup, and you should profit from this to ensure yourself against data loss. Of course with the modern capacities of several terabytes you needn't worry about space anymore, and you can easily have your PC backup files and your media on one harddisk without any problem.  But of course, 2TB harddisk are rather clunky and cannot easily be carried around because of their size and weight, so if you need an external harddrive for work-related files such as documents and pictures our audio files, you can easily purchase a smaller capacity harddisk which fits easily in your pocket and can therefore be used wherever you are without adding bulk or weight to your bags or pockets. That's a very fast and secure way to save for example journalistic writing since it can be used with every computer and it can be password protected to ensure security and confidentiality.
