Slide 1: ==== ==== For More About Football? Visit This Website www.footballjerseys.healthandfitnessjournals.com ==== ==== Wembley is the most famous English football ground and is well known all over the world. It is often referred to as the new Wembley stadium. This is because the previous ground was demolished and the new structure was built on the same site. The old stadium had plenty of character and is fondly remembered by many supporters. In truth, the old ground was in need of modernisation and it was decided the best course of action was to start again from scratch. The new Wembley stadium cost in the region of £798 million and was dogged by scandal and controversy throughout its construction. It is the most expensive stadium ever made although the initial cost was expected to be around £200 million. Work started in 1995 and it took nearly twelve years to complete because of numerous delays caused by design issues. It is also known as the venue of legends instead of the home of football used previously. It is without doubt the biggest structure compared to other English football grounds. The capacity of the stadium is 90,000 which is a record for any current English football grounds. There is protection from the elements by a sliding roof although contrary to popular belief this does not close completely. The old Wembley had the distinctive twin towers which were recognised by fans everywhere. To ensure the new Wembley stadium had a unique design feature, the architects came up with an arch to give the stadium a distinctive look. The arch is the world longest unsupported roof structure. It is also fitted with a special beacon to warn low flying aircraft. The venue is used primarily for hosting England home games. It is also used for staging prestigious domestic cup finals as well as the championship, league one and league two promotion play-off finals. During cup final matches, the winning team will have to climb 107 steps to enter the royal box and collect the trophy. This is compared to the famous 39 steps the old Wembley had. New Wembley is the largest stadium in the world that has every seat under cover. Seating is also divided into three tiers. The stadium has over 2,600 toilets which are more than any other venue in the world sporting or otherwise. The stadium sets new standards for English football grounds and is a massive improvement on the old Wembley which was not the easiest of places for supporters to travel both to and from. A significant amount of money has been spent on improving the transport infrastructure in the surrounding area. The first professional match to be played at the new Wembley stadium was the Under-21 international game between England and Italy. This match saw David Bentley become the first Englishman to score at the ground. The author contributes to the English Football Blog website.
