He played football for amateur team Queens Park while working as an apprentice tool maker and union shop steward in the Clyde shipyards. Ferguson signed for St Johnstone in 1960 and went on to play for Dunfermine in 1964. In 1965/66 he scored 45 goals in 51 games for the club and became joint top scorer in the Scottish League. He later joined Rangers for a record fee of £65,000 but was blamed for a mistake that led to a Celtic goal in the Cup final. Nottingham Forest were keen to sign Ferguson but he moved to Falkirk and then on to Ayr where he finished his playing career. Ferguson had successful stints managing East Stirlingshire, St Mirren and Aberdeen before being appointed Manchester Utd manager in 1986. Ferguson began the job of completely rebuilding the squad over the next few seasons. In 1990 the team won the FA Cup., the first of many trophies for the new manager. Since then Alex Ferguson's Manchester Utd have dominated domestic and European football winning two doubles and a treble in 1999, bringing the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the Champions League trophy back to Old Trafford. He has signed many of the most exiting players of all time including Ronaldo, Rooney, Cantona, Giggs, Cole, Sherringham and Yorke. Ferguson has rebuilt the team from scratch several times over and continues to win major competitions year on year, He is, without doubt the greatest Man Utd manager of all time.
