Slide 1: Why study Geography?
Slide 2: Because you have to! Ha! Just Kidding!
Slide 3: Why study Geography?
Five areas of focus that geographers bring the study of a place.
Slide 4: Five focus areas of geography
1. The reason things are located where they are. Why does McDonald’s chose a particular location?
2. Geographical systems that shape our world. The study, for example, of earthquakes and their devastation.
Slide 5: 3. Interactions between people and the environments in which they live. For example, what is the relationship between global warming and the rise in popularity of sport utility vehicles? 4. Global connections between regions and countries. In the study of trade, for example, what role do we as Canadians play when we purchase products from another country?
Slide 6: 5. Special tools and skills that geographers use, such as mapping, graphing and aerial photography and remote sensing. The study and use of GIS software is an example.
Slide 7: An Introduction to Canada
Area, Population, Density
Slide 8: The Area of Canada:
Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world.
Slide 9: Population:
•Canada ranks 32nd in the world in terms of population. •In 1998 Canada’s population was 30 600 000. •Only one in every 200 people in the world is a Canadian.
Slide 10: Population Density
Slide 11: Canada ranks 206th in the world in population density, with an average of 3 persons/km2.
Slide 12: Wealth:
•Canada ranks 11th in the world in GDP per capita. •GDP, gross domestic product, is the total value of all the goods and services produced in the country in a year. •When it is divided by the country’s population, it gives an indication of the country’s wealth.
Slide 13: The citizens in countries with a higher average GDP are better able to afford the basic necessities of life: •food •shelter •clothing •medical care. They may also be able to afford some of the the luxuries like cars, computers, trips, etc.
Slide 14: The opposite is true for citizens of countries with lower GDP/capita. However, no matter what the GDP/capita, there are people living in various degrees of wealth and poverty in every country of the world.
Slide 15: GDP/capita varies enormously around the world but countries largely fit into one of two categories: Richer - GDP/capita averages $18 130 Poorer - GDP/capita averages $1090 There is a great range of values and a large gap between the rich and the poor.
Slide 16: GDP per capita for some selected countries.
